Physically impossible for me to care when people complain about Vkei bandmen wearing braids.
They may be significant to some black people but they mean very little to me. I've never worn braids regularly but I've worn my natural hair since I started middle school. Black styles have history but that affects me little in my daily life. People love my natural hair, they complement it and point out characters I look like. I have no personal pain associated with it. I know this influences my opinion.
For me all that matters is:
1. Does it look good or stupid on them?
2. Are they doing it while having racist opinions about black people?
That's about it. I love the photos of Imai with dreads and braids! I think he looks wonderful! And as far as I'm aware he doesn't think poorly of black people! All checks out!
When I see people discuss it they often bring up "Not listening to black people." It's a good sentiment, but black people do not all hold the same opinion. Even if they hold your opinion they will still have someone who could say that to them. At the end of the day people have to think for themselves and come to their own conclusion with what people are telling them. If after that you still think they're racist that's fine, but "Not listening to black people." is a pretty useless thing to say.
Also braids are not a thing unique to only black people? I know there are some that really only black people do but braids as a whole exist everywhere. Is it so scandalous that they simply do another style. Do corn rows and french braids really have that much of a meaningful difference?
